Our Mission
We believe that mission is more than a one-time visit to a foreign country. Awakening Hope seeks to empower Christian-led mission teams to build lasting relationships that awaken hope in both the people served and the people serving.
Our missionaries offer spiritual, physical, educational, and economic support to the villages we serve. When we work in Guatemala, we do so as the hands and feet of Christ, transforming both the lives of the Mayan people in the villages we support and the lives of our volunteers.
“If I speak in the tongues of humans and of angels but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. Mariposa
The green mariposa (butterfly) is a Mayan symbol of hope. Bright colors, patterns, and symbols evoke Mayan culture. The Cross, above the outline of Guatemala, represents the call to share the gospel of Christ with those we serve.

Our Partners and Sponsored Villages
The Awakening Hope team has been serving the Mayan people of Guatemala for many years, with multiple partner organizations serving in sponsored villages. We are actively recruiting additional partner organizations to expand our reach to more villages.

Beginning in the summer of 2013, Locust Grove Baptist Church in New Market, Alabama has developed a lasting relationship with the Mayan village of Chuluc in southwestern Guatemala. With the help of dedicated in-country partners and generous US donors, the Locust Grove missions team has worked to improve the quality of life for the people of Chuluc in our four focus areas: Evangelism-Discipleship, Improving Education, Improving Economic Conditions, and Improving Healthcare.

In 2019, Wilson Lumber adopted the small village of El Potrerillo, about 45 miles west of Guatemala City. Our work there includes sending teams of employees several times a year to share the gospel, assist with construction projects or medical clinics, and various youth activities. Recent projects include constructing a new kitchen for the school, and upgrading the water filtration system to provide clean water to the approximately 90 families who call El Potrerillo home.

Our story with our village of San Antonio really begins at the birth of Mission Firefly. Our church was looking for an opportunity to help our people get on mission with God and to establish a long-term presence somewhere in our world where we could go back year after year building relationships and “displaying” and “declaring” the good news of Jesus to those without the hope of Jesus. About that time a guy joined our church who had the same vision and was a little further along in the process than we were. So, we joined together and in the process, adopted our village in San Antonio in 2012.
We have taken mission trips each year and have conducted VBS for the children, medical clinics, birthday parties and other ministries during the trips. In 2014 we began our child sponsorship program and we are now sponsoring over 100 students. This sponsorship ministry gives us the opportunity to help the entire village physically and spiritually. We are able to provide school lunches, medicines, school supplies, school tuition for older students, shoes, clothing and other needs with the sponsorship funds.
Our church family is highly invested in praying for the people of San Antonio, giving to ministering to the people of San Antonio and going on mission with God in San Antonio to intersect the souls the people of San Antonio with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our long-term goal is to see God work in such a powerful way that San Antonio becomes a gospel sending station to their area and beyond.

Parkview began its partnership with the Village of San Lorenzo in February 2023. Over several trips, we have already developed a deep love for the kind and welcoming people of the village.
While most in San Lorenzo have heard the name of Jesus, we have found that very few have much knowledge of God's Grace, Jesus' Sacrificial Death, and Salvation from Sin through Faith Alone. Please pray for the souls in San Lorenzo as Parkview is committed to sharing the full gospel of salvation through faith alone, by grace alone, in Jesus Christ alone.
San Lorenzo has urgent water scarcity problems and Parkview is working on helping the village find long-term solutions to ensure water is accessible year-round. Additionally, there is no healthcare facility in the village; Parkview has been excited to bring medical and dental support on our trips to meet this critical need.
Parkview provides sponsorships to students and widows in the village. Students in San Lorenzo attend through 6th grade, Parkview began child sponsorships in 2023 and has already seen an increase in students staying interested in school. The school sponsorships provide school supplies and meals to children who otherwise may not have access to nutritionally balanced meals each day. Parkview is prayerful that through sponsorships, we will see more students choosing to attend school beyond the primary school ages.
Parkview also supports widows and elderly in the community by providing food and support with healthcare needs through monthly sponsorships. The church built a home for a widow with 7 young children in 2024 and several other building projects and looks forward to continuing to meet physical and housing needs in the community.
